CA All ancient peoples had their "Great Story." It would be their explanation of how they and the world came into being. The creation story of Moses told in Genesis became the creation story of Jews, Christians and Muslims and thus of the Western and much of the Mid-Eastern world. It is a beautiful story, powerful, poetic and bold. For countless generations of believers, it answered the basic question of how the world came to be. God created the world in six days and surrounded the firmament with water and He put the sky above and filled the earth with life. Then sailors and poets realized that the world was round and the sun circled the earth. The earth was not flat. Then Galileo with his telescope revealed that the earth was not the center of the universe but circled the sun in a great orbit. He was threatened with death by the Roman Church and silenced. But other scientists knew he was right. Then came the microscope and the discovery of invisible worlds that exist side by side with the visible world. The great story of science was emerging and could not be silenced by the church that feared what they perceived as a threat to the great story of their scriptures. The separation of science and religion is the great tragedy of Western Civilization. There is nothing in the great story of science that says you can’t believe in the great story of faith. Faith is about meaning and science is about understanding. You can’t have one with out the other. Unless of course you’re stuck in the literal truth of scriptures that were written before humanity even had a compass. There is no way Moses and other ancient story tellers could know about planets and orbits, and molecules, atoms and dinosaurs. Those revelations all came later. And are no less true then the great revelations of Moses and Abraham. They are all part of our Great Story which is still revealing itself through science and faith. This is the gospel of the Rev. Michael Dowd, a born again Christian who was born even again into the great revelation of Evolutionary Spirituality that brings together faith and science. Dowd’s newly published book THANK GOD FOR EVOLUTION is an amazing romp through all the issues surrounding this very complex and vital topic. His message can speak to you wherever you are on the religious spectrum, from fundamentalist to secular humanist. You don’t have to give up your faith or your science; you just have to experience where it fits in the "Great Story." It is not your beliefs that ultimately matter, it is how you live and the legacy you leave. This book fills a gaping hole in American religious life; an honest popular dialogue between science and religion. This dialogue has been taking place in seminaries and universities for decades but seldom reaches down to the church pew on Main Street. Here it is. If you wish, you can download a free copy of the book in a pdf file from this website. Or if you're like me and must have a book on paper, you can order it from Amazon. There are also several videos of Rev. Dowd on YouTube. Punch in Thank God For Evolution and hit search. What an adventure life is! |

USA I read Michael's book early in 2008 and when I was half way through it a second time I decided to begin sharing it with my friends and neighbors. One thing lead to another, and in late March I invited Michael to come speak at my church. Cold Spring is a community in central Minnesota made up of 3,000 conservative German catholics. Michael spoke at our ELCA Peace Lutheran Church with about 75 persons in attendance. The ripples from the rock he threw into the community lake are still rippling... Duane Kuss |

CA As a young person who has struggled with tangible religion I want to say thank you. I was raised Catholic and have walked through many religions in my short time. I have perpetually sought the truths only because I found that the dogma was too much for me. Hearing you speak in Ventura last night was inspiring and heart warming. I have long held that I was of the stars, it seemed logical, rational and true. I also believe in the metaphysics of evolution, the power of prayer, fasting, and meditation. Never have I come across a theory so loving and all embracing as to accept all facets of my beliefs and offer facts to support them. So thank you. Thank you a BILLION times over! I hope that as we continue to evolve, as my faith earns support, the support which you are so passionate about, as humanity changes, this will take root. This is an amazing movement. I offer you and Connie the prayers of my heart. You have the courage and drive to help all of this happen. May the incredible power of the Great Ever Moving Spirit be with you! Namaste. |

NB Canada Wow! I’m reeling! I’ve just started reading “Thank God for Evolution!” and feel I must share my enthusiasm for this magnificent tome. My first impression is that only a passionate, energetic, and committed evolutionary evangelist could compile and compact such a wealth of information on science and religion all in one place. Most impressive is how the book draws from the expertise and knowledge of so many others on the same journey. In other words, this book is not only about private revelations and traditional beliefs it is also based primarily on ongoing public revelations and on the new cosmic story that is now emerging in human consciousness. Scanning ahead from page 100, I’m convinced this timely book is for everybody: for those who speak in tongues as well as for those who hear “God’s native tongue” speaking clearly and truthfully through deep contemporary knowledge and through the scientific facts. Well done, Michael! You must be walking on cloud nine, as you well deserve to be. Who knows where this book will lead: Oprah? Larry King? A movie? Yours is a “Great Work” indeed! Thank you for sharing your passion, knowledge, and vision with the world, and thank God for evolution and for new spiritual directions for our time. USA I have been rereading TGFE which inspires me even more the second time than the first. Here is a vignette from my life: Today I am especially moved by this quote (from page 195): "You can live a life of ‘Christ-like’ integrity with or without an evolutionary wordview. It can be done either way. It's just much easier with an evolutionary worldview." In my case, the sacred evolutionary worldview makes Christ-like integrity even possible. While in church yesterday, I realized once again how much more deeply and widely I could receive the message of divine love because of this sacred evolutionary world view. Communion, the sermon, and the songs all shine with more relevance, more power, and more grace in the light of evolution. As a result of this enriching integration of spirit and science, I and those near to me are so much happier and inspired to work for social and environmental sustainability. Others in my church have been reading and have been inspired by Thank God for Evolution! I've been reading the well-organized and easy to follow study guide in anticipation of leading members of my church in a group study of this awesome book. Thank you again, for all you do and for the invitation to help you do it! Co-Creatively Yours, Cathy Russell |
